DirecTV Turns To Tandberg For Local HD

Satellite Operator to Deploy Vendor’s MPEG-4 AVC Encoders

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 10/16/2008 5:35:00 AM

DirecTV will use Tandberg Television’s MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding encoding systems as part of its local high-definition channel expansion.

The value of the deal wasn’t disclosed. By the end of 2008, the satellite operator plans to provide local HD broadcast channels in more than 121 cities, representing approximately 88% of TV households in the U.S.

In 2005, DirecTV picked Tandberg’s MPEG-4 AVC HD platform to launch HD services, a contract the companies said at the time was worth $9 million.

For the local HD rollout, DirecTV will use Tandberg’s EN8095 encoders, which provide IP statistical multiplexing, 8VSB input and control of up to three different outputs (MPEG-4 HD and standard-definition and MPEG-2 SD). The satellite operator also uses other Tandberg products, including the WatchPoint Workflow System and Xport Producer content production solution.
