Vonage Ordered to Pay Sprint $69.5M in Patent Suit

Federal Jury Rules in Favor of Sprint Nextel

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/25/2007 9:33:00 AM

A federal jury on Tuesday ruled in favor of Sprint Nextel in a patent-infringement lawsuit against Vonage Holdings and awarded Sprint $69.5 million in damages.

The U.S. District Court jury in Kansas City, Kan., found that Vonage had willfully infringed six Sprint patents in providing voice-over-Internet-Protocol service.

Vonage immediately announced that it will appeal the decision. “We are disappointed that the jury did not recognize that our technology differs from that of Sprint’s patents,” Vonage chief legal officer Sharon O’Leary said, in a statement.

In March, Vonage was found to have infringed on three Verizon Communications patents, and a jury in that case awarded Verizon $58 million. Vonage is appealing that decision. http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6438921.html

O’Leary, in her statement on Tuesday, said: “Vonage has already demonstrated that it can keep its focus on customers and on its core business while managing ongoing litigation.”

Vonage also said it “will seek to develop technological workarounds that don’t infringe on Sprint’s patents,” which the VoIP provider said it was doing in the Verizon case as well.
