Travel Is for the Younge

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 2/16/2005 12:22:00 PM

Discovery Networks U.S. has gone to England for a second time in a week to recruit a general manager for one of its channels, this time naming a British Broadcasting Corp. veteran head of Travel Channel.

On Wednesday, Discovery Networks appointed Patrick Younge executive vice president and GM of Travel -- a slot that has been vacant since Rick Rodriguez left in July.

Younge joins Travel from his most recent post, since 2001, as head of programs and planning for BBC Sport. He was responsible for programming such as Grandstand, Sunday Grandstand, Rugby Union and Rugby League, and he served as liaison with BBC Television sports staffing and talent.

Younge was directly responsible for scheduling more than 1,000 hours of sports output annually on BBC1 and BBC2, and he delivered 61% growth in average match audiences for his international rugby portfolio since 2002.

Previously, Younge spent two years as commissioning editor for multicultural programs at Channel 4.

Last week, Discovery Networks announced that it was plucking another official from the United Kingdom to be general manager of TLC. It hired David Abraham, who has been GM of Discovery Networks U.K.’s nine British channels since 2001.

Discovery Networks president Billy Campbell has also recruited a third GM from England, veteran BBC programmer Jane Root, as GM of Discovery Channel.
