Report: U.S. IPTV Users to Top 9 Million by 2011

Yankee Group Projects Sevenfold Increase in Next Four Years

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 3/10/2008 5:26:00 AM

The number of IPTV subscribers in the United States is projected to increase sevenfold in the next four years, from 1.4 million in 2007 to 9.8 million in 2011, according to a recent report from Yankee Group.

The 9.8 million subscribers would represent a 20% share of multichannel video in markets where IPTV is expected to be available, according to the firm.

Over that time period, Yankee Group projects the number of cable TV subscribers will decline by 10.6%. The firm forecast cable video subs dropping from 68.5 million in 2007 to 61.2 million in 2011.

Direct-broadcast satellite providers, meanwhile, will be flat, with 30.5 million subs in 2007 and 30.8 million in 2011, according to Yankee Group.

Worldwide, according to a recent report from ABI Research, IPTV subscribers are expected to grow from about 13.5 million in 2007 to more than 90 million by the end of 2013.
