Showtime, Shield Top Vision Award Nominations

One day after earning an Oscar best-actor nomination for his work in The Last King of Scotland, Forrest Whitaker earned a best-actor nod Wednesday from the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications for his work on The Shield.
FX’s gritty cop drama garnered the lion’s share of nominations for NAMIC’s March 27 Vision Awards, which honor outstanding achievements in original, multiethnic cable programming.
NAMIC said a record 37 networks received nominations. Showtime received nine -- three of which came from comedy series Weeds -- while MTV Networks (which includes Comedy Central, Logo, Nickelodeon, TV Land and VH1) garnered eight nods.
Whitaker’s performance as a tough internal-affairs cop helped The Shield to draw four of a record 73 award nominations in 15 categories, which include the first-ever honors for animation, music video and original movie and/or special. NAMIC also said it expanded its best-actor and actress category to include awards in both the comedy and drama categories.
Other programs receiving multiple nominations in the drama categories include Sleeper Cell (Showtime) and The Closer (TNT).
In the comedy categories, Weeds received three nominations, while Comedy’s Mind of Mencia and BET’s Comic View received two nods.
“Since 2004, the number of nominated networks has increased year over year, which is indicative of cable’s commitment to multiethnic, culturally diverse programming,” NAMIC president Kathy Johnson said. “In turn, the NAMIC Vision Awards continue to be the leading platform for recognizing these achievements.”
