Sling Media Intros Sub-$200 HD Box

The TV-to-Internet Device Maker Also Debuts On Nokia Smartphones

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/27/2007 12:24:00 AM MT

Sling Media, the target of a $380 million takeover by EchoStar Communications, has launched a lower-priced version of its high-definition device for streaming TV content over broadband networks.

Called the Slingbox Solo, the box carries a suggested retail price of $179.99 -- $100 lower than the price of Sling's Slingbox Pro, which has a $229.99 SRP, plus a $49.99 external cable to connect to a high-definition set. The Slingbox Solo can connect to either a standard-definition or HD set-top box, whereas the Pro version can connect to one HD and up to three SD sources.

Slingbox Solo will be available through retail partners, including Amazon.com, Best Buy, Buy.com, Circuit City, CompUSA and Fry’s as well as via Sling's own site.

Sling also announced a new version of its SlingPlayer Mobile software that is compatible with smartphones that run S60 software on the Symbian operating system, including Nokia Nseries and Eseries devices.

All U.S. Nokia N95 customers will receive a free version of SlingPlayer Mobile on their phones; for a limited time, Sling is offering Nokia N95 customers in the U.S. a discount on the Slingbox AV.
