Fox Reality announced that it will begin filming a documentary series on the 18-week training program for deputy sheriffs in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
Tentatively entitled The Academy, the series offers an inside look at self-defense, weapons training, dealing with aggressive assailants and studying gang warfare. There will also be written and oral tests recruits must pass in order to continue.
Filming begins Monday, Oct. 30.
“It will be a real privilege to be the first to chronicle the extraordinary stories of the men and women who dream of becoming deputy sheriffs in the largest agency in the United States,” said executive producer Scott Sternberg, who also produced ABC drama series The Marshal. “This training process is one of the most intense in the world, and we have been given an unprecedented opportunity to show viewers firsthand what it takes to become a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.”
The LASD is responsible for patrolling 3,154 square miles. Sheriff duties include apprehending most-wanted suspects; custody and correctional-facilities duties within the world's largest jail system; tracking inmate information; and providing court services and security. The LASD Homicide Bureau is staffed by 100 detectives who investigate more than 400 murders per year.
The Academy will debut on the newly launched network in May.
