Study: 34.6M Tap Mobile Web

By Karen Brown -- Multichannel News, 8/14/2006 12:06:00 PM

More than 34.6 million users logged onto the Internet using their mobile devices in the month of June, according to a new study fielded by analyst firm Telephia.

The Telephia Mobile Internet Report found that e-mail sites were the top sites, with 12.8 million users logging on to Yahoo! Mail, MSN Hotmail and AOL Mail.

Weather sites landed in second place, with 8.5 million visits to The Weather Channel’s Weather.com and Yahoo! Weather sites.

Sports sites including ESPN came in third at 7.1 million mobile visitors, with ESPN racking up 5.3 million of that total.

Search sites such as Google and Yahoo! also were popular, drawing in 6.5 million mobile users.

Among individual sites, Yahoo! Mail was the leader, with more than 6.5 million mobile hits. Weather.com came in second at 5.8 million mobile views, and ESPN’s 5.3 million was good for third place.

“Mobile Web usage has continued to grow over the past year, as Internet-content providers continue to extend their reach into the mobile space,” said Bernard Brenner, Telephia’s director of mobile content. “As the industry matures and more mobile users continue to complement and extend their Web activity via their wireless devices, Internet-content providers are well-positioned to broaden their audience overall.”
