EarthLink has another citywide Wi-Fi network project, this time landing a contract to set up a wireless network for the city of Pasadena, Calif.

The 23-square-mile network will provide connections for city buildings and employees and a symmetric 1 Megabit-per-second offer high-speed Internet connection for residents and businesses. EarthLink also will open its network to competing Internet service providers wanting to offer Wi-Fi service.

In addition, EarthLink will offer connection services for small businesses including T-1 replacement, and it will work with the city to develop a discount Internet service program for qualified residents.

Information about subscription prices for the residential and business services was not released.

As with other projects including a planned network in Philadelphia, EarthLink will use Wi-Fi mesh networking gear from Tropos Networks that will be mounted on light poles throughout the city. It also will use Motorola Inc. MOTOwi4line of wireless networking products, including its Canopy high-speed backhaul and Wi-Fi mesh network equipment.
