Strong MLB Division Series Debut

TBS’s Final Two Cleveland-New York Contests Are Highest-Rated Cable MLB Games Ever

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/9/2007 8:09:00 AM

Boosted by the third and fourth games between the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees, TBS averaged a 4.4 household rating and 5.7 million viewers through its exclusive coverage of Major League Baseball’s four Division series.

The 13-game average, lifted by the aforementioned contests that were the most-watched Division series games ever on cable, represented an 18% ratings increase and a 26% advance over the 4.5 million viewers ESPN, ESPN2 and Fox garnered from Division series play in 2006, according to MLB officials.

TBS’s coverage also showed improvement on a number of demographic fronts, with gains of 41% among men 18 to 34, 27% among men 18 to 49, 41% among adults 18 to 34 and 33% among adults 18 to 49.

The third game of the Indians/Yankees series in which the Bronx Bombers kept their season alive drew an average of 8.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched Division series game ever on cable, according to MLB. That mark was supplanted last night when The Tribe took out the Yankees, 6-4, as that clinching game attracted 9.2 million viewers on average, the highest Division series average ever on cable. Those two contests exceeded every Division series last year on Fox as well.
