Sci Fi Plugs In Gaming Reality Show

Series Will Pit Gamers Against Each Other For 100 Grand

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 10/30/2008 6:50:00 AM

Sci Fi Channel Thursday confirmed it will begin production on WCG GameQuest, the working title for an eight-episode reality show that will pit video game players against one another in search of the world’s best all-around gamer.

The series, which will be shot on location in Los Angeles, will premiere sometime in the first quarter of next year, network officials said. Samsung is the official production partner with Granada America and World Cyber Games (WCG) serving as producers.

WGC GameQuest will feature top game titles from various studios and will incorporate physical challenges that bring video games to life, as well as elimination challenges in an arena before hundreds of spectators.

The gamer who emerges from the pack of 12 competitors will win a prize package that includes $100,000 and trips to future World Cyber Games events around the world.

“With two out of every three American households playing videogames, it’s clear that this mainstream phenomenon is a perfect arena for the channel’s agenda of broadening the brand while celebrating imagination,” Dave Howe, Sci Fi’s president, said in a statement. “The colorful and eclectic group of men and women competitors will simultaneously fit and completely shake up the ultimate gamer stereotype.”

WCG GameQuest was created by Michael Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith (Phenomenon, Gameshow Marathon and Last Comic Standing) who will executive produce.
