Science Channel Honors Mr. Wizard
Network’s Weekend Schedule Dedicated to Don Herbert

Following the death Tuesday of longtime TV host Don Herbert -- known by generations of kids as Mr. Wizard -- The Science Channel plans to dedicate a large chunk of its schedule this weekend to classic programming featuring Herbert.
Herbert died June 12. He was 89.
Herbert’s weekly Watch Mr. Wizard program debuted on NBC in 1951 and ran for about 15 years. After a Canadian-produced version of the program featuring Herbert ran in the 1970s, Nickelodeon launched the program -- renamed Mr. Wizard’s World -- and carried the series from 1983-90.
The Science Channel, which is owned by Discovery Networks U.S., acquired rights to Mr. Wizard’s World in 2004. The network ran 20 episodes in 2004 and 2005.
The network said it will dedicate its entire weekend of programming to the life of Herbert, running 15-second spots at the top of the hour that will pay homage to Mr. Wizard.
The network also plans to run several episodes featuring Herbert, including. Friday night’s schedule: Building the Future: The Search for Ultimate Energy, How It’s Made and Beyond Invention.
It will run Venus Unveiled, From the Earth to the Moon and Mars Underground Saturday night. Sunday night’s schedule includes How It’s Made, Time: Day Time and Time: Earth Time.
