Copper Thieves Spark Time Warner Outages

Cable Operator Offers $10,000 Bounty

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 8/7/2007 5:41:00 AM

Copper thieves are the suspected cause of service outages to Time Warner customers in the Dallas area, and company officials have put a $10,000 bounty on their heads.

Outages to phone, Internet and video customers have occurred in June and July, according to Time Warner.

A June 19 incident caused an outage to 45,000 customers of the company’s North Texas division, as well as “thousands of dollars” in damaged equipment, according to the company. The most recent event, on July 24, cut services to 16,000 customers. Vandals accessed conduit attached to highway underpasses.

“When our digital phone customers lose access to 911 and other critical services as a result of these criminal actions, we’re going to do everything in our power to fight back and prevent it from happening again,” said division president Robert Moel, announcing the reward.
