Advocating for Diversity

By Staff -- Multichannel News, 5/27/2007 8:00:00 PM

Paul Butler, 37
Gospel Music Channel

Paul Butler has a track record of making a difference. Not only has he played an important role in the success of companies where Butler has worked, but he has also been a strong advocate for diversity.

Butler joined Gospel Music Channel — “One of the most dynamic brands in the space,” in his words — in 2006, and manages the network’s legal and business affairs.

As vice president of business affairs and development, Butler also oversees development of ancillary business opportunities and consumer products.

“Gospel Music Channel is breaking a lot of new ground, and overcoming the traditional divisions and separations in this genre,” he said. “At the same time, based on the responses we’ve gotten from the industry, our strategic partners, our affiliate partners and especially artists and fans, we are on the right track.”

Previously, Butler was an executive at Viacom, where he worked for VH1 and CMT, serving as director of program enterprises and business development; senior counsel for music programming and products; and counsel. While at MTV Networks, he was on its U.S. Diversity Council and a member of the subcommittee chosen to write MTVN’s “Business Case Statement,” which set diversity guidelines.

Butler also serves on the board of directors for The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a non-profit organization that helps African-American and Latino youths.

He earned to bachelor’s degrees from the University of Rochester and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
