GamePlay HD Sets Fall Tournament

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 8/27/2006 8:03:00 PM

Video gamers will get to watch a video-game tournament in HD this fall as GamePlay HD will distribute a tournament based on Electronic Arts’ new Battlefield 2142 video game.

The network, part of Rainbow Media Holdings’ Voom HD Networks, will tape the eight-part series from Las Vegas, according to Mark DeAngelis, vice president of programming and development for the suite of HD services. The winner-take-all tournament will award the winning team $30,000.

The series will feature new technology created by San Diego-based production house Gamecaster that will enable the show’s cameramen to film within the Battlefield 2142 game as the tournament is taking place.

“With 150 million gamers in this country, high-definition is where the gaming world is heading,” DeAngelis said. “With this series, GamePlay HD is not only getting the exclusive on a yet-to-be released game, but it is also benefiting from the creative drive of the Gamecaster crew and from the Gamecaster Cybercam technology, which offers a significant new breakthrough in TV coverage of games.”
