Discovery Communications will wave goodbye to Discovery Home Channel in 2008 but say hello to an as-yet-unnamed network focusing on green lifestyle programming.
The programmer Thursday announced its Discovery PlanetGreen global, cross-platform initiative, which, in addition to the refocused 24-hour network, also includes a $50 million investment in new original content and a multiplatform offering with interactive tools and how-to resources.
DCI said the new network “will provide entertaining, authentic and quality information for such categories as eco-design, organic food and green architecture.”
“The goal of Discovery PlanetGreenis to use Discovery’s worldwide credibility to be the most comprehensive and trusted global resource for celebrating, preserving and protecting the planet,” DCI CEO David Zaslav said in a prepared statement.
“The enormous viewer response to Planet Earth demonstrates the interest and passion for more information about our wondrous planet,” he added. “Discovery PlanetGreen aims to be the No. 1 media destination for this growing consumer segment.”
