‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ Debuts With Record Ratings

ABC Family’s July 1 debut of its new original seriesThe Secret Life of the American Teenager drew 2.8 million viewers, a network record for a series debut.
The show, which stars Shailene Woodley (pictured) as “Amy Juergens,” a wholesome high school girl dealing with a unplanned pregnancy, also bowed as the network’s highest-rated original series telecast in households (2.1 million) adults 18-34 (1.2 million) and viewers 12-34 (1.7 million.). It also ranks second overall among all original series telecasts, behind only Kyle XY’s August 2006 season-one finale, which drew 2.9 million viewers.
Secret Life, which stars former teen star Molly Ringwald as Amy’s mother, also doubled to quadrupled year-ago viewership for the same time slot, rocketing up166% in total viewers (2.8 million vs. 1.1 million), by 361% in adults 18-34 (826,000 vs. 179,000), by 191% in adults 18-49 (1.2 million vs. 411,000) and by 277% in total viewers 12-34 (1.7 million vs. 457,000).
Among targeted women viewers, Secret Life also bowed as ABC Family’s No. 1 original series telecast on record in women 18-34 (620,000), women 18-49 (891,000) and females 12-34 (1.1 million).
Secret Life was created and written by Brenda Hampton and is directed by Ron Underwood.
