‘Design Star II,’ ‘Deserving Design’ Lift Net To Bevy Of Viewership Marks

The penultimate episode of HGTV Design Star II crafted the second highest primetime rating in the network's history.
The Sept. 9 installment of the reality series delivered a 2.3 household rating from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research data, a performance topped only by the concluding episode of HGTV Design Star, which notched a 2.5 mark on Sept. 10, 2007.
Again trailing the show’s season one finale, Sunday night’s episode was also the network’s second highest primetime deliver of women 18+ (a 2.0 rating against the demo) and persons 18+ (1.4).
Design Star II also proved to be a strong lead-in for a sneak peek of Vern Yip's new show, Deserving Design at 10 p.m., which posted a 2.1 household rating. Attracting 1.24 million and 1.22 million adults 25 to 54 watchers, respectively, Deserving Design and Design Star II finished as the third- and fourth-ranked show on ad-supported cable that night, according to network officials.
The strength of those two shows lifted HGTV, which today announced that former Cartoon Network head Jim Samples is taking over as president, to its best ever mark among women 18+ in primetime, a 1.6 average. According to network officials, the Sept. 3 to Sept. 9 span marked the Scripps Networks service’s highest weekly average among households (a 1.3 to finish in a tie for sixth in basic cable); men 18+ (0.4); women 18+ (1.1); persons 25 to 54 (0.7); and women 25 to 54 (1.0).
