Towns, ESPN to Be Honored at Kaitz Dinner

N.Y. Rep, Sports Network to Receive Awards

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 7/18/2007 5:32:00 AM MT

The honorees for the 24th Annual Walter Kaitz Foundation Fund-Raising Dinner will be Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) and ESPN.

The event will be held at the Hilton New York Sept. 19.

Towns will receive the Diversity Advocate Award “for his involvement in promoting diversity through legislative action and community awareness,” the Kaitz Foundation said in a prepared statement.

And the Diversity Champion Award will go to ESPN because its “commitment to diversity is reflected in its on-air programming and commentators. For example, SportsCenter and Outside the Lines regularly cover issues involving race in sports, and recently, SportsCenter launched an ESPN Deportes SportsCenter Minute, spotlighting highlights of special interest to the Hispanic community,” the diversity organization added.

“The annual dinner is a wonderful way to applaud the people and organizations that have demonstrated the importance of diversity for the cable industry," Kaitz Foundation executive director David Porter said in a prepared statement.

"Our awardees this year have shown a deep dedication to enhance diversity and inspire us to achieve more,” he added. “In his 12th term, Congressman Towns has spent his entire career championing new opportunities for minorities. And ESPN is a great example that companies are finding new and innovative ways to embrace diversity.”
