Comcast ramped up Pivot mobile-phone service in Oregon and southwest Washington state -- offered through the cable joint venture with Sprint Nextel -- making it available now to more than three times the number of customers in the region.
Comcast soft-launched a trial of the service in Portland, Ore., last fall.
Starting this week, Pivot from Comcast (http://www.comcast.com/corporate/wireless/default.html) is available to customers in the Pacific Northwest stretching from Longview, Wash., to Eugene, Ore.
The member companies have just begun to expand their services more rapidly in the last month. Last week, Bright House Networks went live in its first market -- Orlando, Fla. -- and Cox turned on its New England division.
Time Warner, meanwhile, this week began offering mobile service to customers in Corpus Christi, Texas, the 10th city where the operator now offers Pivot.
The cable companies haven’t disclosed specific subscriber numbers for Pivot, but they have acknowledged taking a go-slow approach in ramping it up.
Pivot calling plans aren’t less expensive than those from Sprint. Comcast’s plans, for instance, start at $33 per month for 200 minutes -- about $3 more than Sprint’s 200-minute plan. The cable companies have said that their strategy is to emphasize the value of the integrated features available with Pivot.
