CableLabs Qualifies First 'Wideband' Systems

Casa Systems, Arris and Cisco CMTS Gear Certified for DOCSIS 3.0 Spec

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 12/19/2007 1:35:00 AM

CableLabs announced Wednesday that it has awarded qualification status for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.0 gear from Arris, Casa Systems and Cisco Systems.

Under the tiered certification program, Casa's DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem termination system received “silver” qualification, meaning it provides both upstream and downstream channel bonding. Arris and Cisco received “bronze” qualification for CMTS headend gear, meaning they provide downstream-channel bonding.

DOCSIS 3.0 enables downstream data rates of 160 Megabits per second or higher and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps or higher. The headends were tested in CableLabs' Certification Wave 56 under a tiered program that was created as a way to encourage CMTS makers to submit gear for testing earlier than they otherwise might have.

“This technological achievement is a great step for our industry," Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said, in a prepared statement. "CableLabs' rapid certification effort will enable companies to begin to develop products that will support the rapid deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 services in 2008.” Roberts is also chairman of CableLabs.

DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems were also submitted by Cisco, Arris and Motorola as part of the certification wave, but CableLabs made no mention of whether those were qualified.

CableLabs said full DOCSIS 3.0 compliance ultimately will be the sole certification level for CMTS vendors, with the two lower levels of qualification to be phased out.
