RCN Expands in Massachusetts
Cable Overbuilder to Challenge Comcast in Milton
By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 5/21/2007 11:57:00 AM MT
Comcast will face new competition in Milton, Mass., by the end of the year, if RCN remains on schedule to launch its services in the town of roughly 26,000 residents.
RCN said Tuesday that it plans to begin marketing its triple-play package of pay TV, high-speed-Internet and telephone service in Milton by “late fall.”
The cable overbuilder already competes with Comcast and other operators in 16 other Massachusetts communities.
RCN said it has been working with Massachusetts gas- and electricity-power company NSTAR since last year on a deal to share its utility poles to deliver its services. The agreement has been approved by Milton, and RCN said it plans to begin construction on its network in the next few weeks.
“We are pleased to welcome RCN to Milton and the increased competition it brings to our town,” Milton town administrator Kevin Mearn said in Monday’s announcement from RCN. “Milton residents will now benefit from a larger selection of prices, products, and services when choosing their cable, phone and Internet provider.”
In other RCN news, the company received the American Marketing Association’s Washington, D.C., chapter's 2007 M Award in the public-relations-for-profit category.
