Nat Geo Claims Three News, Documentary Emmys

History, Discovery and Smithsonian Channels Also Honored

National Geographic Channel led cable networks with three awards in the annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, bestowed Monday in New York.

Overall, PBS was the top award winner with 10 statuettes, followed with CBS with five Emmys; ABC, four; National Geographic was next with three; the Detroit Free Press Web site, the History Channel and NBC each received two; and cfr.org, the Discovery Channel, HBO/Cinemax, HDNet, mercurynews.com and the Smithsonian Channel each garnered one.

NatGeo's Incredible Human Machine won in two categories for writing and editing. The channel's other award was for the graphic design of Inside the Living Body.

The award for long-form historical programming went to the History Channel special A Distant Shore: African Americans of D-Day. The channel's other honor was for editing of How the Earth was Made. An editing award was also earned by The Discovery Channel's Breaking Point.

The award for long-form investigative journalism went to the Cinemax Reel Life installment, Have You Seen Andy? HDNet's Dan Rather Reports: Combat Photographer won an award for cinematography, as did The Smithsonian Channel for Nature Tech: The Magic of Motion.
