CBS College Sports Network Goes High-Def

HD Service, Carried By DirecTV, Now Available To All Video Distributors

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 5/7/2008 5:03:00 PM

CBS College Sports Network is now available nationwide in high-definition format to all cable, satellite and video distributors.

CBS College Sports Network HD, airing nationally on DirecTV's channel 610, provides an MPEG 4 simulcast feed, enabling fans to watch hundreds of live games in HD across 35 men’s and women’s sports, as well as the new nightly studio show College Sports Tonight.

While CBS College Sports Network HD is currently an upconverted simulcast of standard-def service, the channel will begin producing some of its college football games in the enhanced format  this fall, including five Navy games.

Upcoming HD-produced programming that will also be available on the network includes CBS Sports encore presentations of SEC football games and the 2008 NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship.

“Fans now demand their sports in high-definition and we’re thrilled to bring the HD experience to viewers nationwide,” said CBS College Sports Network executive vice president of distribution Bob Rose in a statement. “CBS College Sports Network continues to grow across all platforms, and the conversion to HD further demonstrates our commitment to providing fans and distributors with relevant and compelling content on the screens they want to watch it.”

During the men’s hoops tournament, CBS College Sports Network, working with broadcast brethren CBS and the NCAA, offered cable, satellite and telco TV distributors a pair of video-on-demand packages: extensive highlights from each of this year’s tourney games, as well as archival takedowns of great games past like Villanova upsetting Georgetown for the 1985 title game, or Christian Laettner’s buzzer-beating turnaround jumper that pushed Duke past Kentucky in the 1992 East regional final.
