Microsoft Hits 2 Million IPTV Screens

Software Giant Says It’s Doubled Footprint Since January

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/16/2008 3:00:00 AM

Microsoft is touting that its Mediaroom IPTV software now serves more than 2 million set-top boxes, doubling its footprint in less than six months.

In January, the software behemoth announced it had reached the 1 million mark.

AT&T—Microsoft’s largest customer in the United States—has told Wall Street that it expects to have 1 million subscribers for U-verse TV by the end of 2008. At the end of the first quarter, the telco reported 379,000 U-verse TV subs.

Of Microsoft’s 20 customers worldwide for Mediaroom, 14 have commercially deployed IPTV service.

In other Mediaroom news, Microsoft is adding three systems integrators—Hewlett Packard, India's Tech Mahindra Ltd. and 180Squared —that have been approved to deploy the IPTV system after completing a training and market-readiness program.

Microsoft is also announcing three new vendor partners: Agilent and IneoQuest, two video-quality assurance vendors, and Harris, which will offer a standard-definition encoder certified for Mediaroom.
