Harmonic Flashes VOD Servers

StreamLiner 2000 Flash-Memory Units Designed For Serving Popular Content at Regional Hubs

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/8/2008 5:52:00 AM

Harmonic launched a line of video-on-demand servers that use flash memory, designed to provide a greater number of concurrent VOD streams for popular content at regional hubs.

The vendor’s StreamLiner 2000 flash-memory video servers extend its random-access memory and disk-based StreamLiner video servers. According to Harmonic, the flash-based VOD servers can reduce the cost per stream for the most highly viewed content.

The servers also integrate with Harmonic’s Armada content distribution network management system, which can dynamically determine the popularity of each asset and move among different types of VOD storage.

Harmonic is showing the StreamLiner 2000 at IBC 2008, Sept. 12-16 in Amsterdam.

Also at IBC, the company also plans to demonstrate a solution for delivering video content over the Internet to TVs, PCs, personal media players and mobile devices. The demo includes technologies from Harmonic, Advanced Digital Broadcast, Amino, PeerTV and Stream Group, and encompasses encoding, transcoding, streaming, middleware and client devices, including the Nokia N95 mobile phone.
