Cablevision Expands Wi-Fi Footprint

Operator More Than Doubles Wireless Network's Reach In New York DMA

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 10/15/2008 3:54:00 AM MT

Cablevision Systems said it has more than doubled the reach of its Optimum Wi-Fi wireless Internet access service across the New York City suburbs.

The operator, which announced its first broad deployment of the Wi-Fi service last month, has expanded the service -- free to its broadband Internet customers -- in commercial and high-traffic areas in its Connecticut, Long Island, Westchester and Dutchess County, N.Y., service areas.

Cablevision also has activated Wi-Fi on commuter rail platforms and station parking lots across Long Island and at many Metro North stations. The service provides symmetrical access speeds of up to 1.5 Megabits per second from any standard Wi-Fi device, including laptop computers and Apple iPhones.

Over the next two years, Cablevision plans to deploy Wi-Fi in the commercial and high consumer traffic areas across its entire three-state service area, a project it has said will cost more than $300 million.

Cablevision currently provides high-speed Internet service to more than 2.4 million customers.

The operator has previously activated Optimum Wi-Fi zones in Denville, Ridgewood and Tenafly in N.J., and the Parkchester section of The Bronx.
