Motorola Packs In Edge-QAM Channels

Apex1000 Supports Up To 48 Channels

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 5/13/2008 9:39:00 AM

Motorola launched the Apex1000, a high-density universal edge QAM device that supports up to 48 channels in a one-rack-unit-high chassis.

Slated to be available by the end of June, the Apex1000 allows any of the QAM channels to be used for broadcast video, video-on-demand, switched digital video, or DOCSIS high-speed data.

“Explosive growth in video on demand, HD programming and converged services is changing the shape of cable broadband delivery,” said Mark Depietro, vice president of video access solutions for Motorola’s Home and Networks Mobility business. “We designed the Apex1000 to give our operator customers the flexibility they need to make the most efficient use of their edge resources.”

The Apex1000 supports up to three hot-swappable QAM modules and redundant power supplies. The system’s video edge-QAM features including network de-jittering, MPEG multiplexing, message insertion and PSI generation following MPEG-2 transport specifications.

Motorola did not disclose pricing for the Apex1000, which it expects to demonstrate next week at the Cable Show ’08.
