Disney Channel rode its tween-targeted musical/comedy series, Hannah Montana, to the top of the cable-network primetime-ratings chart last week.
Disney finished the week of July 9-15 with a 2.5 household rating, easily besting USA Network, which finished in second place with a 2.0 rating. Fueling Disney’s surge was its Friday-night lineup, backed by the July 13 episodes of Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Both shows averaged a 4.1 rating, placing them in a tie for fourth place among the highest-rated shows of the week.
TNT’s July 9 episode of The Closer and its July 15 Nextel Cup auto-racing event finished first and third among cable shows with a 5.7 rating and a 4.8, respectively, helping TNT to finish third for the week among cable networks with a 1.9 rating.
Bolstered by a 5.1 for its July 9 Home Run Derby coverage, ESPN finished in a tie for fourth place with Lifetime Television, with both networks averaging a 1.4 rating. TBS, Fox News Channel, AMC and Hallmark Channel all tied for fifth place with 1.2 ratings, while Discovery Channel, Court TV and Cartoon Network rounded out the top 10 tied with 1.1 ratings.
In other ratings news, Lifetime added some ratings punch to its Sunday-night lineup with the July 15 debut of two new series.
And ABC Family’s new series, Greek, nearly held on to the audience from its lead-in, Kyle XY. The July 9 debut of the 10-episode series that examines collegiate fraternity-sorority life at a fictional university drew a 0.9 rating and 1 million viewers -- slightly below the 1.1 rating/1.1 million viewers for Kyle XY, which aired an hour earlier.
