Stolen Laptop Exposes 9,000 Charter Employees’ Personal Data

Total of 12 Laptops Snagged From Cabler’s Greenville, S.C. Office

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 8/14/2008 10:44:00 AM

Charter Communications Inc. is notifying 9,000 current and former employees across the country that their personal information was stolen, along with the laptop that housed it, last month from a Charter Media office in South Carolina.

The theft occurred from a Greenville office on July 11 but was discovered July 14. Charter spokesman Marty Richmond said 12 laptops were stolen but only one contained sensitive data. That computer had the Social Security numbers, names and birthdates of the employees.

Charter is contacting the effected employees by mail and they have been offered a year of credit protection service. No customer data was compromised.

“We take the security of the personal information of our employees and customers very seriously. We encourage anyone who receives the letter to take us up on our offer,” Richmond said.
