Nat Geo’s ‘Dogtown’ Premiere Draws 3.1 Million

Two-Hour Debut Tracks Recovery of Former NFL Quarterback’s Dogs

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 9/8/2008 11:41:00 AM

National Geographic Channel’s two-hour premiere of Dogtown: Saving the Michael Vick Dogs on Friday night averaged 2.3 million homes and 3.1 million viewers, the network said Monday.

The show’s 9 p.m. ET airing Sept. 5 averaged a 1.05 household rating and a 0.65 rating for adults 25 to 54, up 144% among households and 160% among the adult demo compared to the 2008 Friday primetime average. It was the highest-rated Season Two series premiere in the network’s history and also Nat Geo’s top Friday night premiere ever.

Over two airings (9 p.m. and midnight ET), Dogtown: Saving the Michael Vick Dogs reached a combined 3.3 million households, 4.3 million viewers and 2 million adults 25 to 54.

NGC placed seventh among all ad-supported cable networks for adults 25 to 54 in primetime and from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET last Friday, outperforming Discovery Channel, History, A&E Network, TLC, Animal Planet and MTV.

Dogtown: Saving the Michael Vick Dogs follows the journeys of four of the most challenging fighting dogs taken from property owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. Dogtown’s team of dedicated experts work to help Cherry, Meryl, Denzel and Georgia overcome their violent pasts and live happier, healthier lives. Dogtown, a shelter for lost canine souls, is part of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, one of the largest no-kill animal facilities in the country.  It is often the last hope for dogs requiring specialized or urgent medical attention or for abused and neglected animals.

New episodes of Dogtown air every Friday at 10 p.m. ET beginning Sept. 12.
