AMC Hot on Trail

By Christian Lewis -- Multichannel News, 1/5/2007 8:01:00 AM

Spurred by the success of its first original movie, Broken Trail, AMC announced two more Western-themed projects, one with Trail star Thomas Haden Church and the other with director Walter Hill.

The first deal is for a one-hour Western pilot, untitled so far, to be written, directed and executive-produced by Hill in conjunction with writer and executive producer Ron Parker (Joan of Arc).

The second deal is for a four-hour Western miniseries, which Church will write and executive-produce with writer David Denny. Entitled Last Horseman, the series will be set in the late 1800s in the American Southwest and will follow an African-American cowboy seeking revenge for the murder of his parents.

Broken Trail was a transformative moment for our network, and the recent Golden Globe nominations are an acknowledgement of our creative strategy,” AMC executive vice president of programming and production Robert Sorcher said in a prepared statement.

“ThomasHadenChurch’s poignant performance showed him to be one of the finest actors of his generation, and we are very pleased to be working with him, as well as the brilliant director, Walter Hill, on these new projects,” he added.

AMC also green-lighted its first original drama series, Mad Men, from writer/producer Matthew Weiner (The Sopranos), slated to premiere during the summer, as well as one-hour dramatic pilot Breaking Bad, from writer/producer Vince Gilligan (The X-Files).

Broken Trail was nominated for three Golden Globes in the categories of best miniseries/motion picture for TV; best performance by an actor (Robert Duvall) in a miniseries/motion picture for TV; and best performance by an actor in a supporting role (Thomas Haden Church) in a series, miniseries or motion picture for TV.

The two-part network premiere of the miniseries June 25 and 26 delivered an AMC record for household rating (7.7), household delivery (6.8 million) and total viewership (9.7 million).
