DirecTV has deployed Harmonic’s video-encoding equipment as the satellite provider gears up to offer 100 national high-definition channels by the end of the year.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The DBS firm is using Harmonic’s DiviCom Electra 7000 HD MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (H.264) systems, which can encode up to four 1080i or 720p HD channels with a one-rack-unit-high device.
DirecTV is also using Harmonic’s ProStream 1000 stream-processing platform, which provides distributed statistical multiplexing.
