Charter Communications has suffered fire damage for the second time this season in Malibu, Calif.
The cable TV operator’s primary fiber optic cable was burned in this weekend’s Corral Canyon fire. About 12,000 feet of fiber will have to be replaced, according to the company.
Charter is restoring service, but has to follow electricity power crews into the effected community.
As of Monday, the fire is nearly contained but it destroyed 53 homes and damaged another 29 in the coastal community.
The fiber also feeds video to homes in Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Hidden Hills. Fire-related power outages forced consumers to bypass their digital set-tops until the provider could restore signals and reauthorize the boxes.
Because it was also damaged in the wildfires in the community in October, Charter was in the process of building a redundant path to make the company less vulnerable to fire damage. Charter officials said the system is a few weeks away from completing that project.
