Cablevision Drops Fit TV
By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 4/3/2006 2:17:00 PM
Cablevision Systems Corp. pulled the rug from under Discovery Communications Inc.’s Fit TV, dropping the fitness channel March 31 after its carriage deal expired.
A DCI spokeswoman confirmed the 38 million-subscriber network’s removal from Cablevision systems representing 3 million New York-area subscribers.
DCI inherited its Cablevision carriage agreement for Fit TV from its $225 million purchase of The Health Network from Fox Cable Networks Group in May 2001. DCI -- which also distributes Discovery Health Channel -- renamed the service Fit TV one year later.
“Both sides decided to let the deal run its course and expire,” the spokeswoman said.
Cablevision executives could not be reached for comment at press time.

At a time when there is a national obesity epidemic, it is an unconscionable business decision to remove a television network that is the only source of exercise for a multitude of people. In this economic climate where many thousands of people have lost their jobs and can no longer afford their health club memberships, Fit TV was a valuable and affordable alternative. Additionally, I personally know of senior citizens groups who watched Fit TV in senior citizen facilities to stay as fit as possible. There is so much pure garbage on television, it is amazing that something as worthwhile as fitness programming would disappear when health, wellness and obesity reduction is a national initiative.

Now we know who realllly runs thangs! the money makers! What happened to conern for our health. We are speaking out but no one's listening or concerned. Where are the shows? will they go into re-runs? who would/could we complain to/about?
I depended on those early morning shows for mind, body and spirit enrichment and development, daily.

I want it back too. Cablevision doesn't care what its subscribers want. They just dropped HGTV and Food Network too!! And they raised my rates.

Oh My Goodness ! I didn't know that cablevision dropped the fitness channel. I hope they bring it back or put a fitness channel to the schedule. I was just getting motivated to exercise due to health issues. and Now that I need to do that, there is no health fitness channel. I'm sure that I'm not the only person who wants it back. So Please Cablevison bring it back watching others exercise helps alot ..
