Sundance Acquires Three Imports

‘Big Girls Blouse,’ ‘On the Road in America,’ ‘Pulling’ Set to Debut in 2008

Sundance Channel said it acquired the rights to three international series that will have their U.S. premieres on the network next year.

Big Girl’s Blouse, one of the series, is an eight-part Australian sketch comedy show featuring the early work of Jane Turner, Gina Riley and Magda Szubanski of Sundance Channel series Kath and Kim. It first aired on Australia’s 7 Network in 1994.

On the Road in America, produced by Layalina Productions of Washington, D.C., and Visionaire Media of Los Angeles, follows the experiences of four Arab students -- Ali from Egypt, Sanad from Saudi Arabia, Lara from Palestine and Mohamed from Lebanon -- as they travel across the United States over a 10-week period.

“Though it was created for audiences across the Middle East, we believe that this series can provide cross-cultural understanding for the American audience as well,” Laura Michalchyshyn, the executive VP and general manager, programming and creative affairs, for Sundance Channel said in a release. The 12 half-hour episodes originally aired on Middle East Broadcasting Centre.

The third is the off-beat British comedy Pulling, co-written and created by Dennis Kelly and the show's star Sharon Horgan. Sundance Channel acquired the first two seasons (six 30-minute episodes each) of the show, which originally aired on BBC 3.
