By Staff -- Multichannel News, 6/26/2005 8:00:00 PM

New York— BET was the big winner at Cable Positive’s 4th Annual Positively Outstanding Programming (POP) Awards, claiming honors in five of the nine categories saluting outstanding cable-industry programming in the industry’s commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS.

BET was accorded the network of the year honor, topping sister Viacom Inc. services MTV: Music Television and Showtime. Home Box Office won the distinction in 2004.

The June 20 ceremony was held here in the Hudson Theatre at the Millennium Hotel. Roma Torre of New York 1 News; Scott Lowell of Showtime series Queer As Folk; Josh Berresford, Charlie David and Nadine Heiman of here!’s production of Dante’s Cove; and Jacque Reid of BET Nightly News were among the presenters.

“Cable Positive is committed to honoring the invaluable and growing role cable television performs in raising HIV/AIDS awareness,” said Cable Positive president and CEO Steve Villano in a statement.

In addition to its network laurels, BET received the award for outstanding biographical program for Naked Truth 3 and outstanding special programming for its 106 & Park: World AIDS Day installment. The African-American-targeted service also took the top spot in the outstanding original film/movie area for Walking on Sunshine and first-place in the public service announcement arena for its “Rap It Up” campaign.

The other winners were Discovery Health Channel in the outstanding documentary field for Dangerous Deception: Living on the Down Low; Cable News Network for outstanding news coverage for Are You Positive?; FX for outstanding original series for Nip/Tuck’s Sean McNamara episode; and Time Warner Cable of New York and New Jersey and the AIDS Service Center for their “I Found” PSA in the community-partnership arena.
