AZN Restructures, Lays Off Half Its Staff
Philadelphia — Comcast Corp. last week laid off more than half the staff of its Asian-American targeted AZN Network.
Network managing director Steve Smith was one of as many as 50 of the network's approximately 80 employees receiving pink slips in the reorganization, according to sources close to the network. AZN CFO Rod Shanks has taken over as general manager.
SBC Sues Calif. City Over Permits
San Francisco — SBC Communications Inc. in California, now a unit of AT&T Inc., has sued Walnut Creek, where the city has insisted that work permits needed to upgrade its phone plant are subject to municipal cable franchising.
The suit reasserted the telco's argument that its planned video service does not meet the federal definition of a cable service. It is, instead, an interactive on-demand service and not subject to local franchising.
According to the electronic filing made Nov. 17 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Walnut Creek officials said they would approve the permits, but only if they included clauses that require SBC to adhere to local cable rules. When SBC refused to accept the city terms, the city declined to issue the permits. SBC stopped its plant improvements in the city after the Oct. 18 vote.
Study: YES Wins Out-of-Home
New York — A Nielsen Media Research study commissioned by Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network indicates that the regional sports service would ring up 14% increases in the New York DMA among men 18 to 49 and 25 to 54, and register a 10% gains with adults 18 to 49, if out-of-home viewing were entered into the ratings equation.
