TBS Benefits From Playoff Bounce

Network Averages 4.6 Million Viewers Through Six MLB Division Series Games

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/5/2007 11:36:00 AM

TBS, lifted by the first game of the New York Yankees-Cleveland matchup that produced the highest ratings on the network in five years, has averaged 4.6 million viewers through the first six contests of Major League Baseball’s Division series.

TBS’s scorecard, according to Nielsen Media Research data, was topped Oct. 4 by the 6.7 million viewers that tuned in on average to watch The Tribe scalp the Bronx Bombers, 12-3.

The game’s 5.3 household rating was TBS’s highest since 2002, according to information released by Major League Baseball officials early Friday evening. MLB and TBS officials were not available at press time to elaborate.

The second game of the Colorado-Philadelphia Phillies series in which the Rockies clubbed the Phillies, 10-5, averaged 3.3 million viewers, while the final contest of the Oct. 4 tripleheader, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 8-4 triumph over the Chicago Cubs, garnered 3.7 million. The average audience of 4.6 million viewers on Oct. 4 represented a 76% increase over the second day of Division series play last year, which showcased a
doubleheader on ESPN.

In concert with strong performances for its Oct. 3 tripleheader, TBS's delivery outpaced by 23% the 3.7 million viewers ESPN and Fox averaged for the five games they telecast over the first two days of Division series play in 2006, according to MLB executives.
