Sky Italia Picks Patents from Gemstar-TV Guide

DBS Provider Licenses IPG Technology

Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Italia, a satellite-television service with 4 million subscribers, signed a multiyear patent-licensing agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide International.

The deal lets Sky Italia use Gemstar-TV Guide's intellectual property related to electronic program guides. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

In December, Gemstar-TV Guide signed a similar agreement with British Sky Broadcasting to use EPG patents in the United Kingdom and Ireland.  

It also recently announced patent-licensing deals with Verizon Communications and TV-listings provider MeeVee.
