National Geographic Channel Leads Cable Pack With 12 News/Documentary Emmy Noms

HBO/Cinemax Grab 10 Nods As Medium Garners 47 In Total

Cable networks captured 47 nominations in the 29th annual Emmy award competition for news and documentary programming, with National Geographic Channel leading the cable pack.
National Geographic was honored with 12 nominations, which were announced today in New York, including four for episodes of its National Geographic Explorer series and another four for Incredible Human Machine.
 
HBO/Cinemax received 10 nominations, followed by History Channel with six; CNN with five; Current TV, Discovery Channel and Smithsonian Channel with three each; HDNet alone, HDNet in partnership with PBS, MSNBC and VH1 with two nominations each; and Animal Planet, Discovery Times Channel and Oxygen with one apiece.

By comparison, PBS was nominated 38 times; followed by ABC and CBS, each with 17; and NBC with 14.

The most-nominated docs on HBO/Cinemax were To Die in Jerusalem with three; and The Trials of Darryl Hunt and What Remains: The Life & Work of Sally Mann, each with a pair.. HDNet's Dan Rather scored a nomination for best investigative journalism with his piece called The Trouble with Touchscreens; and Oxygen scored with Who Cares About Girls? reported by Lisa Ling.

The awards will be presented Sept. 22 at the Frederick P. Rose Hall at Lincoln Center, located in the Tim Warner Center.
