Cable Nets Honor Carson

By David Cohen -- Multichannel News, 1/25/2005 12:38:00 PM

Cable networks are setting their tributes to late Tonight Show host Johnny Carson, who died Sunday morning at the age of 79.

• TV Land will offer an encore presentation of TV Land Legends: The 60 Minutes Interviews featuring Johnny Carson Thursday at 10 p.m. (EST/PST), the network said Tuesday.

“After initially turning down the offer, in 1979, Carson agreed to become the interviewee and spoke frankly with Mike Wallace about his work on The Tonight Show and aspects of his personal life including his deep shyness, which many interpreted as his being distant and guarded,” TV Land said.

“We also see Carson talk about some of his more light-hearted hobbies, such as tennis, card tricks and playing the drums,” the network added.

• GSN will present a six-hour tribute featuring several of Carson's early career appearances on classic game shows Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (EST/PST).

The special will include clips from I've Got a Secret, What's My Line?, To Tell the Truth and Password, as well as rare appearances from Lucille Ball, Steve Allen, Henry Morgan, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Kitty Carlisle and others.

• TV Guide Channel will air one-hour specialRemembering Johnny Carson Wednesday at 7 p.m. (EST/PST).

The special will feature Carson’s friends and fans in the entertainment industry, including TV Guide Channel’s Joan Rivers, Carson’s Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon and TV Guide editor Mary Murphy.
