Microsoft Could Force UPC Set-Top Delays

-- Multichannel News, 8/14/2000

Redmond, Wash.-Microsoft Corp. could miss a September deadline to deliver digital set-top software to United Pan-Europe Communications N.V. (UPC), forcing the MSO to initially deploy boxes with fewer capabilities, Reuters Group plc reported last Friday.

UPC, which is partly owned by Microsoft, had said that it plans to deploy 30,000 digital boxes by the end of the year containing cable modems and other interactive features.

Microsoft officials could not be reached for comment. UPC said in a prepared statement: "We continue to work with Microsoft as we develop our digital services, and we highly value the relationship with the company. Rollout of the set-top computer of UPC is planned for end of September."
