CNN Election Recap Prompts Reform
-- Multichannel News, 2/5/2001
NEW YORK-Following a two-month independent study, Cable News Network last Friday issued new guidelines regarding its election coverage.
First, CNN said it won't continue using Voter News Service-which supplies Election Day survey data for projections-unless VNS implements several changes to assure that the errors that plagued this year's election coverage will not reoccur.
CNN also said it will no longer use exit polls for projections in close races; won't project a winner in a state until all of its polls are closed; and won't project a winner in a state if balloting shows there is less than a 1 percent margin between the candidates.
