Fujitsu Delivers Integrated 40-Gbps Optical Wavelengths

Vendor to Demonstrate Flashwave 7500 Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer at Cable-Tec Expo, NXTcomm

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/19/2007 12:01:00 AM

Fujitsu Network Communications will offer what it claimed are “fully integrated” 40-gigabit-per-second transmission capabilities for the Flashwave 7500 Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer.

With 40-gbps wavelengths -- upgradable from existing 10-gbps dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing interfaces -- the Flashwave 7500 offers up to 1.6 terabytes of capacity, according to the company. In addition, the system supports network sizes up to 1,000 kilometers and up to 24 optical add/drop multiplexer nodes per network.

“While many of our potential competitors have chosen a 40-gbps solution that requires an external shelf and alien wavelengths to work, we believe our fully integrated approach offers a far more compelling and manageable option for carriers,” Fujitsu senior vice president of planning and development Bill Erickson said in a prepared statement.

The company said it developed various techniques to support 40-gbps DWDM transmission over existing networks, including advanced modulation techniques and per-wavelength dispersion compensation.

Cable operators that have deployed the Flashwave 7500 include Comcast, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks.

Fujitsu plans to demonstrate the Flashwave 7500 ROADM with the 40-gbps capabilities this week at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ Cable-Tec Expo 2007 in Orlando, Fla., and theNXTcomm 2007 conference in Chicago.
