TVG Strikes Online Gambling Deal with Yonkers Raceway

Agreement Allows New York State Residents to Place Wagers Online

By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 11/1/2007 11:30:00 AM

Gemstar TV Guide’s TVG cut a deal with Yonkers Raceway which will allow New York State residents to gamble on horse races at select tracks nationwide through TVG’s Web site.

The news is significant for New York State residents that like to gamble on horse races. Until Thursday’s announcement, the easiest way to place a wager was at a local Off Track Betting office.

In addition to being able to place bets online, TVG viewers on several cable systems outside of New York State can use their remote controls to gamble on horse races. TVG’s wagering system allows cable TV subscribers to link their checking accounts to their gambling funds, and cable operators also get to share in the revenue TVG generates from handling the bets.

In New York State, TVG viewers can place bets via the Internet and telephone, but they can’t gamble by using their cable remote controls.

TVG is distributed in New York State by several Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon FiOS TV and RCN systems, in addition to satellite TV distribution on DirecTV and EchoStar’s Dish Network.

“We are thrilled to work with Yonkers to deliver premium account wagering services to New Yorkers,” David Nathanson, senior vice president and general manager of TVG, said in Thursday’s announcement. This service will bring innovative new wagering options to New York customers and deliver significant benefits to industry participants.”
