Cox Gets Voice In IP Communications Forum

SIP Forum Promotes Signaling Protocol For Advanced IP-Based Communications

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/17/2008 3:49:00 PM

Cox Business announced Tuesday that it is the first cable operator to join the SIP Forum, a consortium of IP communications companies.

SIP, the Session Initiation Protocol, is a signaling protocol used for advanced IP-based voice, messaging and conferencing services.

Other members of the SIP Forum include CableLabs, Cisco Systems, IBM, Microsoft and Siemens.

“Traditional telephone service is quickly becoming a thing of the past, and Cox Business is committed to delivering advanced IP voice services that meet the evolving needs of customers,” Cox Business VP of product development and management Kristine Faulkner said, in a statement. “Organizations such as the SIP Forum are extremely important for promoting thought leadership and encouraging additional innovation, development and product availability of new generation solutions.”

In November 2007 Cox Business launched the SIP-based VoiceManager service, which integrates existing desktop phones, PCs and wireless devices.

The company plans to offer other features in the future, including “SIP trunking,” a service that will allow direct links between the Cox Business IP network and SIP-enabled IP private branch exchanges (PBXs).
