NY1, NY1 Noticias Lauded For Papal Visit Coverage

Tri-State Catholic Committee Gives Awards News Networks Its Top Honor

By Ashley Barton -- Multichannel News, 6/22/2008 6:38:00 AM

The Tri-State Catholic Committee on Radio & Television awarded NY1 and NY1 Noticias with its top honor for their Papal Visit 2008 coverage. It captured in detail Pope Benedict XVI historic visit to the Washington D.C. and New York areas.

The TRISCCORT awards are usually given to individuals exhibiting or demonstrating excellence and quality to television and radio. The awards this year, though, were given to the cable news networks for their in-depth coverage of the live events that included on-scene reports and features throughout the pope’s visit. Viewers also saw the stations’ Papal Visit Special Reports, which re-caped daily events along with commentary and observations from clerics, academics and journalists.

Additionally, the networks’ coverage was broadcast on local Time Warner Cable systems around the country.

“NY1 and Noticias’ coverage of the pope’s visit was important to New Yorkers and millions of people across the country," said Steve Paulus, NY1 News and NY1 Noticias senior vice president and general manager, in a statement. “Thanks to Time Warner Cable, we were able to extend our reach and provide viewers in other cities with comprehensive coverage that allowed them to feel the pope’s presence in their homes.”

Added Maritza Puello, executive editor of NY1 Noticias:  “The pope’s visit to the United States is among this year’s most historic happenings. It’s a moment in time that will be remembered by people all over the world, and we are proud to have played our part by presenting those events to Time Warner Cable subscribers,”
