YES Tops WPIX In Subway Series Matchup

Regional Scores First Victory Over Station With Yanks-Mets Head-To-Head Coverage

-- Multichannel News, 6/30/2008 3:53:00 PM

Going head to head with their coverage of the second game of the Subway Series doubleheader last Friday, the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network beat WPIX-TV, marking the first time a regional beat an over-the-station in the ratings.

YES scored a 5.7 household rating in the New York DMA, versus a 5.2 for CW11 for their presentations of the New York Yankees-New York Mets game, according to Nielsen Media Research data, that translated into 533,000 viewers on average for the regional sports network, versus 494,000 for the station, which carries the Mets contests locally, when they are not on SNY.

YES’s June 27 presentation was the second-highest-rated and second-most-watched regular-season Subway Series gave ever on a New York regional sports network, trailing only its May 18, 2007 telecast, which slugged a 6.2 rating in the New York DMA and 589,000 viewers on average.

Last weekend’s Subway Series marked the final for the clubs in their respective ballparks. Citifield will replace Shea Stadium and a new Yankee Stadium will open across the street from “The House That Ruth Built” for the 2009 season.
