Lynnwood, Washington, has become the first community in that state to approve a competitive video franchise for Verizon Communications.
The city council of the 34,000-population town in Snohomish County, north of Seattle, voted July 14 to give operating authority to the telephone provider. The incumbent video provider is Comcast Corp.
Verizon said that it already offers FiOS Internet service of up to 50 Mbps to customers in the community. The franchise gives Verizon the authority to offer FiOS TV to 15,000 homes in the suburban community.
